Toon Defoer

Toon joined ICRA in 2004 as a training consultant. He also was the Francophone Programme Coordinator for a few years. Toon is presently in charge of the coordination of all Capacity Strengthening activities within the 2SCALE project.

Toon joined FAO in 1985 as an agricultural research and development advisor in the Comoro Islands. From 1989 to 1992 he he was with DHV consultants (the Netherlands) and posted in NWFP, Pakistan as coordinator of an agricultural development programme, part of an integrated development project. During this period he developed and managed a farming system oriented approach for agricultural development with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and extension workers.

Toon joined KIT in 1992 and worked in southern Mali as chief technical advisor of a project supporting research on farming systems and natural resource management within the Malian agricultural research institute, until 1996. Together with field teams, Toon developed methodologies for participatory action research in natural resources management, parasitic weeds control, soil fertility management, common pasture and woodland management. He returned to Europe and joined KIT headquarters in Amsterdam in 1996 and carried out support missions on interactive learning methodology development in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Mali.

The combination of his experience of southern Mali, short-term mission work and multiple contacts with scientists, development workers and farmers, became the basis of his PhD on Participatory Learning and Action Research for Integrated Soil Fertility Management. In 2001, Toon joined WARDA –The Africa Rice Center in Côte d’Ivoire as a senior scientist in charge of participatory innovation and change.
